Working with banks, other Government agencies and international partners, we back Australia’s exporters, supply chain businesses and industries, contributing to a more stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific while advancing Australia’s trade, investment and economic security objectives.
The Lead Economist, Commodities and Critical Minerals (Director level) will undertake complex economic analysis and provide evidence-based advice internally to inform Export Finance Australia’s risk assessment process. The focus will be on transactions and exposures in commodities and critical minerals. The role involves a high degree of interaction with both internal and external clients, and reports to the Chief Economist.
ABOUT YOU
- Undertake commodity risk assessment and market analysis in support of Export Finance Australia, as it administers the Critical Minerals Facility and supports the Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, with underwriting and risk management
- Assume responsibility for commodity forecasts, forecasting methods and views on commodity markets, including critical minerals, using macroeconomic and industry-specific demand and supply dynamics
- Maintain effective relationships with a range of stakeholders, including government and private sector information sources
- Represent Export Finance Australia at meetings of alliance partners and clients, and deliver public presentations where required
- Prepare economic scenarios and test plausible deteriorations in markets and the risk environment
- Contribute to organisational capability in economic analysis
- Comply with and implement Export Finance Australia’s policies and procedures
- Identify, manage and comply with Export Finance Australia’s obligations arising under statute, regulations, the general law, and industry codes or guidelines relevant to the division/group
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- 8+ years’ work experience as an economist with demonstrated sound judgement
- Firm grasp of the principles of economics, both micro and macro, particularly of open economy Macroeconomics and Money & Banking
- Experience in forecasting and monitoring commodities markets, with critical minerals preferred
- Strong understanding of commodities markets and critical minerals value chains
- Demonstrated experience delivering advice to senior stakeholders, informed by market analysis
- Excellent communication skills including written, verbal and presentation skills
- Experience in statistical analysis and economic forecasting / scenario stress testing
- Ability to tailor analysis to the differing needs of various internal and external clients
- A good understanding of international economic institutions
- MS Word and Excel proficiency
- At least degree qualified in Ecomomics or related subject
