This exciting position as a project officer at GEGAC will support, plan, deliver, and evaluate key operational projest intitiatives within the primary health and wellbeing and childrens youth and families divisions at GEGAC.

Organisational Profile

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

Under the guidance of the Principal Project and Policy Officer, as a Project Officer you will support to plan, deliver, and evaluate key operational project initiatives within the Aboriginal Primary Health and Wellbeing, and Children, Youth and Families divisions. Working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO), this position ensures that project activities reflect community priorities and cultural integrity.

This role supports the progression of existing and emerging projects across primary health and social services, including feasibility assessments, program development, policy review, and stakeholder engagement. Reporting to the Principal Project and Policy Officer, the role also works closely with the Senior Management Team and to ensure projects align with operational priorities, capacity, and community needs.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Project Management Skills: Demonstrated skills and experience in managing projects, including planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Problem Solving: Skilled in gathering relevant data, analysing issues from multiple perspectives, and identifying practical, culturally safe solutions. Able to evaluate the effectiveness of actions and adjust approaches as needed.
  • Systems Thinking: Understands internal and external dynamics that affect project outcomes, including the interplay between community systems, services, and natural environments. Able to diagnose trends, obstacles, and opportunities within the organisational and policy environment.
  • Self-Management: Open to feedback and reflective of one’s own behaviours and their impact on others. Emotionally self-aware and willing to engage in personal development to strengthen leadership practice.
  • Integrity: Operates with transparency and in the public interest; models fairness, cultural respect, and accountability consistent with the organisation's values.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

  • Tertiary qualification in public policy, health, community services, or a related discipline DESIRABLE
  • Extensive experience in leadership, project management and/or policy development within health, social services, or community sectors. ESSENTIAL
  • Demonstrated experience working with or within Aboriginal communities or ACCOs, with a strong understanding of the cultural, political, and historical context. DESIRABLE
  • Actively committed to working closely with the Aboriginal community to build a deep understanding and respect for Aboriginal culture, heritage, and lived experience. ESSENTIAL
  • Willingness to undertake a Cultural Safety Induction and ongoing cultural capability development. ESSENTIAL
  • Driver licence. ESSENTIAL
  • A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
  • A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
