Systems Safety Engineer (Mid-Level)

Location: Adelaide, South Australia

Project: Collins Class Submarine (CCSM)

Type: Full-time / Permanent (Contractors considered)

Reporting to: Mr Rob Milne, Team Lead

Role Summary:

The Systems Safety Engineer will support the development of a comprehensive safety case for the extension to the operational life of the Collins Class Submarine Capability. As a key member of the South Australian team, this role involves executing detailed safety engineering tasks, developing safety arguments, and integrating evidence from Fundamental Inputs to Capability (FIC) to ensure the platform remains safe and environmentally compliant.

Key Responsibilities:

• Hazard Management: Facilitate and document hazard identification and risk analysis activities in accordance with MIL-STD-882E.
• Safety Case Development: Draft and review safety artefacts, including hazard logs, safety requirements, and verification evidence to build the Body of Evidence (BoE) for the Safety Case Report.
• FIC Integration: Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure safety arguments encompass all FIC elements of the submarine capability.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain day-to-day engagement with submarine engineering authorities and stakeholders in Adelaide to ensure alignment with tasking priorities.
• Quality Assurance: Ensure all engineering deliverables meet ISO 9001 standards and the rigour required for endorsement through the Defence Seaworthiness framework.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Mid-level engineering experience (approx. 5–10 years), sufficient to work autonomously on technical tasks but junior to the Project Director level.

Technical Expertise :

• Demonstrated experience in Systems Safety Engineering and the application of safety standards (specifically MIL-STD-882E).
• Experience with the Defence Capability Lifecycle, preferably within the maritime or submarine domain.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, or related discipline).

Skills:

• Strong technical writing skills for the production of safety artefacts.

Clearance:

• Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance (NV1 or higher is standard for this team composition).
